Is it possible to shorten the sleeves of a dress shirt?

I got a very nice french cuff shirt for Christmas; however, the sleeves are a little long and “puff out” some right about the cuff. It fits nicely everywhere else. Can a tailor fix this?

Yes, find a good tailor or seamstress and give them details, they can taper them a bit for you and cut to the right length before replacing the cuff. It is fiddly work, but can be done. Good on you for wanting to keep the shirt, and tailoring to suit you will make it look fabulous.

Cheers and best wishes Lisa

I'm not sure where you might buy them any longer, but they used to be very popular – try an arm garter – maybe even a rubber band (Elastic band) might do the trick. Attach around the arm and overlap/tuck/fold the extra material back on itself – if worn with a jacket noone will know.

Yes, you don't even need to mess with the cuffs. The easiest way to shorten a shirt sleeve is just to make a sort of pleat in it halfway up the arm. This way it doesn't show when you're wearing a jacket and the cuffs sit in the right place. A tailor could certainly do this, or even a handy mum or girlfriend.

yep. it isn't even all that tough for a good tailor.

however, you do not want one who says they will just fold the sleeve length and sew it down. you want someone who will take the French cuffs off and re-assemble the sleeves.
