Take from me, a woman who knows what she wants in a guy. Typically I like cufflinks that tend to be classy and more masculine – black and silver are wonderful compliments or single color palettes in this example. I would advise to stay more with the circular shapes and less with the square cufflinks, but experiment with whatever you like. And don't forget to consider your options of matching or contrasting with your suit or suit pants – grey goes wonderfully with a dark silver, black goes well with black. Good Luck!
(P.S. No, it isn't ok to wear round cufflinks with a checker-patterned shirt.)

It's funny, but I had a very similar question just about a week ago.
To give you the synopsis of the rules, cufflinks should be tasteful, and are considered nice looking without being exceptionally formal.
I tend to prefer cufflinks that are subtle, and that accent slightly. So for example, the cufflinks I selected were by Kenneth Cole and were a brushed metal oval shape.
over-the-top cufflinks are entirely up to you. Just remember, if you do wear them, they'll have about the same impact as a keyboard tie.
